Phillip J. Coulson was born in Manitowoc, Wisconson, an only son to Robert and Julie Coulson, in 1921. Robert was a history teacher and football coach, who met an untimely death at the hands of a drunk driver when Phil was only 9. However, Robert was a good father to Phil, having spent time showing him how to work on cars and imparting him with a deep appreciation for history.

In 1939, Phil enlisted in the U.S. Army at the ripe young age of 18. Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, his unit was deployed into the Pacific, and Phil was among the first soldiers selected to join a brand new military formation, the U.S. Army Rangers. Once the war had ended, he was then asked to become a founding member of the Strategic Science Reserve, where he forged most of the friendships and acquaintanceships that he maintains in SHEILD, today.

Throughout his service in the Army and subsequently, the Army Rangers, Phil would often write his high school sweetheart, Lola. They maintained communication throughout the war, and as soon as Phil came home, he put a ring on her finger. However, their plans were never seen to fruition, for Lola met an untimely death when she tried to intervene in the beating of a black man. She caught a fist to the face, and cracked her head on the pavement, dying immediately.

Lola's death hit Coulson in a deep way. He buried himself in his work, becoming one of SHIELD's founding members in 1952, and remains a Senior Agent to this day.
