The Zatara lineage holds a rich and varied history - they can be traced as direct descendents of Leonardo da Vinci, and is related to Nostradamus; Alessandro Cagliostro; the noted alchemists Nicholas Flamel and Evan Fulcanelli; and Lord Arion of Atlantis. Zatanna comes from this lineage, her father is the magician Giovanni "John" Zatara, her mother was the Homo Magi known as Sindella - a member of a mystical human race. Shortly after Zatanna's birth, Sindella supposedly died in an automobile accident, leaving Giovanni to raise their daughter alone.

Which means that Zatanna was raised as a suitcase child - Giovanni travelled the world with his stage act, with Zatanna watching from backstage, and when she was barely six, she was introduced to the stage and she found herself a natural for the attention and the lights. She took under her father's tutelage, learning the arts of the trade - and starting on learning the skills that were impressed upon her by her lineage. As she learned and grew, her skills developed and she honed on her magical abilities.

However, when Zatanna was 15 years old, Zee came home to Shadowcrest from school one day to find that her father had just.. disappeared. She had no way to track him, and no way to know where he went. There was only the book that he had been in at the time - and even it yielded little clue as to her father's whereabouts.

Suddenly alone, Zatanna continued the best way she knew how - she took her act on the road, using Shadowcrest at her home. She continues to perform on stage and screen, but she's still searching for any clue that may lead her back to her father's side.

  • Magician: Inantely tuned to magic, and having learned how to cast from her father, Zatanna's unique way of focus is through 'logomancy', or speaking her spell backwards. For example, by saying "Pots", she can cause someone to "Stop".
  • Zatanna currently has access to the following stable os spells - some that she can pull up with ease, but the more complicated the spell, the longer it will take for her to concentrate:
  • Elemental Control: Currently, Zatanna can locally control the following elements: heat, ice, electricity, water, rocks, wind, light and shadow. These are not far reaching spells and call for the object that Zatanna wishes to manipulate to be in line of sight, and are localized to the same line of sight. While she can create fire, water, and electricity, it cannot dispell the laws of physics - for instance, Zatanna cannot create magical fire underwater - the elemental would overrule the magical.
  • Telepathy: Zatanna has to actively use this ability - it is not passive. She can read thoughts from someone with a spell, but this is a power she does not use lightly and causes her major backlash and headaches when used.
  • Teleportation: Zatanna can teleport herself and up to three others to nearly anyplace within 100 miles of her - as long as she has an idea of what the place is, and that she has been given a description or destination that she can understand.
  • Dimensional Portals: Zatanna can open dimensional portals, but this is dependent on places that she has studied - currently her dimensional travel is limited to the astral plane, but with time and study, she could open portals to Asgard, Limbo, and other locations that are considered other dimensions.
  • Flight: Though this is a major strain on her, and Zatanna perfers to walk, she can give herself the ability of flight. She can fly up to 20 miles per hours for a duration of 30 minutes before the strain becomes enough that she needs to sit and take a break.
  • Transmutation: Zatanna has the ability to alter the reality of objects to change them from one thing to another - she usually uses this to change violent items into non-violent ones. Bullets become flower petals, swords become plowshares. It has to be an equivelant exchange - she cannot turn a Beetle into a VW Beetle, for instance.
  • Shielding: Zatanna can create magical shielding that protects her from physical attack. However, the larger the shield or the more powerful the attack, the more power Zee has to expend to make it useful. She is able to protect herself from bullets quite easily, but larger explosions tend to break her spell and concentrations as well as knock her backwards.
  • Magical Animation: Zee can animate inanimate objects to do her bidding. However, they must serve in their own purpose - brooms will sweep, mops will mop - she cannot make a mop carry and use a weapon.
